Jason Momoa for Men's Health - May/June 2023
It’s Jason Momoa’s next big flex. As MEN’S HEALTH’s May/June issue cover story, the newly single FAST X villain gets real about facing his greatest challenge, fighting for change, and finding a new path. Plus, in his MEN’S HEALTH “Gym & Fridge” cover video, Jason invites us into the Aukland duplex warehouse he’s currently living in to explain everything from his beer and poi filled diet, to the workout routine that helps him prepare for fight scenes, how he stays fit on set and more.
On playing the superhero Aquaman: “Well, to be perfectly honest, I was absolutely baffled that Aquaman was received so well. I’ve done things that are amazing that no one sees and no one gives a shit about. You just don’t know in this business. I don’t go do things and think, Oh, I’m gonna get $1 billion on this one. I go in and do my best job.”
On being a fierce advocate for banning single-use plastic bottles: “We’re just killing our planet. We’re choking our planet out. Why the f*ck are you drinking out of a plastic bottle of water? It’s crazy, ’cause it’s easy to change. Like drink a can of Coke, beer, or sparkling water.”
On how his status as eco-warrior, elevated by his role as Aquaman, enables him to make a difference. He says it’s a calling from deep, deep in his soul, his mana. “It’s my kids’ generation, and they’re looking up to me, going like, ‘You’re Aquaman, you’re Aquaman.’ I’m not f*cking Batman or Superman. That’s really cool to me—it really is.”
On how his passion for climbing, which his mom introduced him to it as a teen, informs his outlook: “Climbing is what keeps me grounded in a chaotic world that just wants more of me. It keeps me centered, keeps me in the dirt, keeps me humble, and keeps me stoked.”
On sharing his passion for climbing with his kids: “That’s the thing I try to teach my children right now. There’s nothing worth doing if it’s not gonna be hard and it’s not gonna be a struggle. It’s okay to fall. You fall, you get back up and do it again. They wanna be perfect and they’re afraid; they think if you fall, it’s bad. But I’m like, ‘No, falling is great, man. Falling is great ’cause you’re gonna succeed if you keep doing it.’ I would never teach acting, but the one thing I could teach is climbing. It gives us this massive bond, and we go outside and do it. It’s the ultimate thing for me.”
On how he wants it to inspire his children: “I don’t get to see my kids right now for a very long time. I gotta share things with them. I’m doing everything that I want to do, everything that I’m designed to do. And you’ve got to do that. I want my children to know that and do that. I worked for a very long time when they were young doing shIt I didn’t want to do to put food on the table. And now? You should only work with the people you wanna work with. You should create with the people you wanna create with. And if you’re not, then you got one shot in this life—you gotta get the f*ck out. Whatever situation you’re in, you gotta find your path, you know?”
The May/June 2023 issue of Men’s Health hits newsstands nationwide on May 9
#RHOA: Shereé Whitfield’s Boyfriend, Martell, Make an RHOA Debut
Sanya Richards-Ross is throwing her husband, Aaron Ross, an extravagant Roaring ’20s themed birthday party on The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 15 premiere, but based on a first-look preview (which you can watch above!), they aren’t the only couple in the spotlight.
Why? Because Shereé Whitfield and her man, Martell Holt, are making their RHOA debut as a couple — and yes, they are a couple. As Shereé puts it in a confessional, “Martell and I, we are officially dating.”
Unfortunately, not everyone approves of the pairing. Kenya Moore is particularly hesitant to give Martell her approval, and she makes it clear why when she reveals that she and Kandi Burruss apparently “heard that [Martell] was also dating someone in Atlanta.” Not only that, but Kenya says Martell tried to DM her. Suffice it to say, he doesn’t take the accusation very well, and before you know it, Kenya is yelling at him.
The party confrontation ends there, but only because the episode rewinds to “four days earlier.” Now we’re at Chateau Shereé just as she’s greeting Martell and dishing on their relationship in a confessional interview. “I met Martell through a mutual friend. He’s on a reality show, and we really enjoy each other’s company,” Shereé explains of the Love & Marriage: Huntsville cast member. “Despite what you see on TV, he’s never shown me anything but respect.”
The only problem? “Martell lives in Huntsville, Alabama,” she notes, “but I would love for Martell to move closer.”
Distance aside, Shereé added that she’s just “really happy” that she “didn’t give up on love” when her years-long on-and-off relationship with Tyrone Gilliams came to an end while she was filming RHOA Season 14.
With the mention of the L-word, a producer asks if she’s “in love” with Martell. “I didn’t say that,” Shereé responds, prompting the producer to add, “You said you were happy you didn’t close the door to love.”
“Yeah, it’s still open,” Shereé says with a laugh. “You tried to get me.”
See more of the couple (and hear what Shereé has to say about Martell’s “big d--k energy”) RHOA Season 15 premieres on May 7 at 8/7c on Bravo.
#NewMusic from Miguel Returns With New Single 'Give It To Me'
Miguel is back with his new single “Give It to Me.” On his first solo release in two years, the R&B singer showcases his intoxicating vocals over hypnotic synths and grungy guitars.
“I like what you got / Would you give it to me?” he sings.
LISTEN HERE
The song follows the resurgence of Miguel’s 2010 single “Sure Thing,” which exploded on TikTok and currently sits at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, Miguel’s highest-charting solo song to date.
This marks his first solo release since his 2021 EP Art Dealer Chic 4. He previously opened up about his mindset as he readies his next project.
“I want to make stadium R&B,” Miguel told Apple Music in 2021. “I want to make big, ‘We Will Rock You’ R&B songs. That was another approach that was important to me because that’s what I was singing. That’s the kind of artist that… I wanted to experience those settings. I wanted to experience that sort of feedback.”
You can catch Miguel rocking the crowd live at the Lovers & Friends Festival in Las Vegas on May 6.
#HipHopNews: Tyler, The Creator Doesn't Want His Music Released Posthumously
Tyler, the Creator wants you to enjoy his music while he’s alive. Following last month’s deluxe release of Call Me If You Get Lost, the Golf Wang rapper played an intimate show at El Rey Theatre in L.A. on Wednesday night, which was announced just hours before and sold out within minutes.
At one point, he told fans that they shouldn’t expect any music from him after he dies. That’s why he decided to release the eight additional Estate Sale tracks now because his will prohibits the release of posthumous music.
“I have it in in my will that if I die, they can’t put no fu**ing post[humous] album out,” he said as the crowd cheered.
He joked that he didn’t want his music released when he’s gone with some “random feature on it, some ni**a I didn’t f**k with.”
Anderson .Paak echoed a similar sentiment about his posthumous music when he tattooed his wishes on his right forearm.
“When I’m gone please don’t release any posthumous albums or songs with my name attached,” reads the tat. “Those were just demos and never intended to be heard by the public.”
During Wednesday’s show, Tyler also performed his leaked song “Penny,” which samples Rich Boy’s “Throw Some D’s.” He revealed that it was one of the first songs he recorded for Call Me If You Get Lost in 2019 and is also his bodyguard’s favorite song.

This is not Rihanna’s first animated role. She previously voiced a teenage girl in DreamWorks’ 2015 animated film Home. Her acting credits include Battleship, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, Ocean’s 8, and Guava Island.

Michelle Obama Makes Surprise Appearance At Bruce Springsteen's Barcelona Concert
Michelle Obama surprisingly showed up at Bruce Springsteen's show in Barcelona. During the concert, the former First Lady sang backup vocals and even played the tambourine.
At the Friday, April 28 event, Michelle, actress Kate Capshaw and Bruce's wife/bandmate Patti Scialfa sang backup vocals for his 1984 hit "Glory Days". Barack Obama and Kate's husband, director Steven Spielberg, were also in attendance as they danced near the stage.
For her outfit, Michelle wore loose purple cargo pants and a dark blazer. She smiled ear-to-ear while onstage, clearly enjoying the moment with her pals.
Prior to the concert, the Obamas, Steven and Kate explored the city together. The respective couples were caught on camera walking hand-in-hand as they walked around Barcelona and visited the Moco Museum.
On Thursday, the group and Bruce had dinner together at the Palace Hotel's Amar restaurant. Rafa Zafra, who is the chef at the restaurant, informed Spanish radio station Cadena SER that the reservation was only made a few hours in advance, according to The Guardian.
Michelle and her husband have been enjoying their lives after stepping out from frontline politics. In December 2022, the mom of two addressed the moment when someone called her spouse "fine as a motherf**ker" while he was on the campaign trail.
After being shown the clip of the moment on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", Michelle jokingly said it was the first thing her husband mentioned when he came home that day. She said, "I hadn't seen that. I heard about it. He came home and that was the first thing he said. I was like, 'How did it go? [He said] 'Somebody said I was fine.' I was like, 'Oh, really. That's so sweet.' "

Kanye West Holds Auditions For New Yeezy Collection
Kanye West is getting back to work. Following the end of his partnership with adidas, the controversial designer appears to be gearing up to launch a new Yeezy collection.
Ye held auditions for his YZY SZN 10 fashion show in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday and Friday. Earlier in the week, he put out a casting call for models with bald or shaved heads. According to TMZ, hopefuls got in line as early as 7 a.m. and some waited until 3 p.m. for their chance to audition.
After the auditions, Ye was gifted with a Husky T-shirt from the clothing brand Roam As a Pack, given to him by a disabled fan. He sported a shaved head, scruffy beard, and sweatpants while posing for a photo with the fan.
Ye’s last YZY SZN 9 fashion show in Paris in October caused an uproar after he wore a “White Lives Matter” T-shirt while joined by conservative commentator Candace Owens. The backlash continued with his anti-Semitic comments, which eventually led to adidas ending their lucrative partnership.
Kanye has been keeping a low profile as of late, but he did step out to support Fear of God designer Jerry Lorenzo. He and his wife Bianca were seen in the audience at Lorenzo’s first-ever fashion show at the Hollywood Bowl earlier this month.
Viola Davis Joins 'The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes' as Lead Villain
All is looking ready and set for the take-off of the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes as the cast has been expanded to include Oscar winner Viola Davis. Davis is set to further fortify an already formidable cast that includes Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Hunter Schafer (Euphoria), Tom Blyth, and Rachel Zegler. Davis will be portraying the villain, Dr. Volumnia Gaul described as the head game maker of the 10th annual Hunger Games. Acknowledging, Davis' acting prowess, Lionsgate motion picture group president Nathan Kahane said of Davis' casting:
“The Hunger Games films have always been elevated by their exceptional casting, and we are thrilled to be continuing that tradition with Viola Davis as Volumnia Gaul. Her formidable and powerful presence will add layers of complexity and menace to this story.”
Francis Lawrence the director of the previous Hunger Games movies who will return to the director's chair for the upcoming prequel also expressed excitement about working with Davis. He described Davis' role of Dr. Gaul as "cruel as she is creative and as fearsome as she is formidable." Lawrence went on to add that the production team had long had their eyes set on Davis to play the role "because of the finely layered intelligence and emotion she brings to every role." Further adding: "A brilliant and eccentric strategist, Gaul is instrumental in shaping a young Coriolanus Snow into the man he will become. We are incredibly fortunate to have an actor with Viola’s extraordinary range and presence to play this pivotal role.”
Viola Davis has run the gamut of roles since she went full fledge with her career in 1992. Davis is no stranger to villainous roles, having portrayed the formidable Amanda Waller in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. Perhaps the evilest role she has taken on has been that of a serial killer on an episode of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Before she is seen as the antagonist in the Hunger Games prequel, Davis will next be seen as the protagonist in the upcoming historical drama, The Woman King where she will play general Nanisca, the leader of an all-female army, the Agojie of the African kingdom of Dahomey as they fight to repel western forces that seek to disrupt their way of life.
From the stage to the screen, Davis has an enviable list of accolades to show for her incredible talent. She has won an Emmy, two Tony Awards, and an Oscar, making her the only Black American to win the triple crown for acting. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be produced by Nina Jacobson and her partner Brad Simpson with the director, Lawrence also serving as co-producer. Executive producers include Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins and Tim Palen.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is scheduled to be released on November 17, 2023. You can read the official synopsis and check out the teaser trailer down below:
“Years before he would become the tyrannical President of Panem, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird, the girl tribute from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favor. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird and a snake.”
The King Center unveils new Coretta Scott King monument and garden
Coretta Scott King celebrated her 96th heavenly birthday yesterday (April 28). To mark the occasion, The King Center in Atlanta dedicated a new monument and garden in honor of the civil rights activist.
Coretta founded The King Center in 1968 after the death of her husband, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to immortalize his life, legacy, and commitment to nonviolence. At the dedication ceremony yesterday, their daughter and CEO of The King Center, Rev. Bernice King, shared touching words in tribute to the memory of her mother.
“The magnitude of her contributions to humanity are yet to be known,” Bernice said of her mom, per the AP. “Today’s dedication of this monument is but a beginning. There’s much more to come, and when her legacy is fully revealed, we will know that because of her, because of Mom, because of Coretta Scott King, the dream lives and the legacy continues.”
Bernice was joined by her niece, Yolanda Renee King, as they untied a ribbon on the gate of the garden and cut another ribbon on the dome-shaped monument. The garden has a stone-paved path leading up to the bronze memorial. It sits near the eternal flame that burns next to the pool surrounding the crypt where the Kings’ bodies are interred.
Under the dome is a sculpture of microphones that includes one live microphone. Artist Saya Woolfalk said that it’s intended for visitors “to speak their own words and commitments to civil rights and nonviolence.” The King family desired to have it on the “sacred ground” of The King Center rather than somewhere else in the city as originally planned.
“It’s an immersive environment,” Woolfalk said of her work. “It’s not a representational sculpture. It’s intended to make you feel like you’re in the spirit of Mrs. King. So you walk into the space, and you feel her spirit.”

Lukas Gage and Chris Appleton are making their red carpet debut as a married couple
Lukas Gage and Chris Appleton turned heads on Sunday night after hitting the red carpet wearing matching rings on their left hands.
The couple attended the Daily Front Row Fashion L.A. Awards at the Beverly Hills Hotel where Kim Kardashian presented Appleton with the hair artist of the year award.
Though the couple hasn't confirmed they officially tied the knot, PEOPLE confirmed that the White Lotus star and celebrity hairstylist obtained a marriage license in Clark County, Nevada.
Reps for Appleton and Gage did not immediately reply to PEOPLE's request for comment.
The couple matched perfectly in monochromatic looks on the red carpet: Appleton was stunning in all-white suit with no shirt underneath and white sneakers and Gage was gorgeous in a black suit with a black button-up shirt and black shoes. Each finished their look with a silver ring on the ring fingers of their left hands.
After presenting Appleton, 39, with his award, Kardashian, 42, took the chance to joke about how happy — and relieved — she is that he's in a relationship.
"Let me say one thing really quick," the SKIMS founder said, returning to the microphone briefly after presenting the award to Appleton. "I'm so happy he's in a relationship right now and that it's out there, because I'm so tired of all my girl friends and guy friends asking me if you're available, and who my hot guy is who is always with me."
Appleton joked that he had "Kim's approval" before making his acceptance speech and acknowledging Gage, 27, in the audience, who he thanked for being "my rock."
Gage and Appleton have had a whirlwind romance. The pair first sparked dating rumors in February when Gage posted a series of photos on Instagram from a trip to Mexico they took together. They made their red carpet debut together in March.
Earlier this month, sources confirmed to PEOPLE the two are engaged. "Friends in their circle are definitely shocked at how quick it happened, but they're happy for them," an insider said. "They seem like the real deal."
A second source close to Appleton told PEOPLE, "Chris has been looking for something real for a long time. This has moved fast but he is dazzled by Lukas."
For the You and White Lotus actor, finding the right partner was a long time coming. "You're going to find the perfect person when you're least expecting it because I was very single for a long time and never thought I would have that happen and it does," Gage told PEOPLE of his relationship. "It's going to happen."
The pair shared some social media snaps together in the weeks leading up to their red carpet debut, and during an appearance on the The Drew Barrymore Show, Appleton confirmed their relationship.
In a March episode of the show, Appleton joined the host in her on-set kitchen to share how he fuels his hair from the inside out. While the stylist was making his smoothie with Barrymore, he added a secret ingredient to promote hair growth and blood flow, and also, subsequently, libido too.
Nick Cannon Is Glad ‘Red Table Talk’ Is Ending: ‘That Toxic Table’
Nick Cannon spoke out on his new radio show Friday (April 28) about the end of Jada Pinkett Smith‘s Red Table Talk.
According to The Daily Cannon host, the Facebook Watch show — which also stars Willow and Jada Pinkett Smith’s mom Adrienne Banfield-Norris — being axed was a “good” thing, particularly in light of Will Smith‘s viral slap at the 2022 Oscars.
“If there was no Red Table Talk, then he wouldn’t have slapped the sh– out of Chris Rock,” he said, according to Entertainment Tonight, referring to the Facebook series as “that toxic table.”
“That was royalty, Will and Jada. Then they brought it to the table,” Cannon went on. “I don’t want to know all this sh– about y’all. I just want to mind my Black-owned business. I don’t want to be up in everybody else’s kitchen. Keep that sh– to y’all selves.”
Over the course of Red Table Talk‘s 129 episodes, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star joined his family multiple times to talk about their personal lives. In one memorable 2020 segment, he and his wife opened up in a one-on-one conversation about their private separation and the latter’s ensuing “entanglement” with singer August Alsina.
Cannon’s aversion to hearing about the Smith family’s private business is a bit ironic considering how public he’s been over the years about his own life — particularly his belief in “consensual non-monogamy” and the dozen kids he’s birthed with six different women, five of whom have been born since last summer.
Beyonce Pledges $2 Million to Support Black Businesses and Students During Renaissance Tour
*Beyonce’s BeyGOOD Foundation announced that it will donate $2 million to Black small business owners and college students in cities along her upcoming Renaissance World Tour.
Founded in 2013 to support programs and underserved communities, the BeyGood Foundation has expanded 10 years later to provide assistance in education, disaster relief, food, water and housing scarcity, mental health, and career development in the United States, Africa, Europe, South America, and the Caribbean.
Beyoncé’s Black Parade Route, launched to support Black-owned small businesses in the US and abroad, has already provided more than 900 small businesses with grants and/or spotlights via her social media.
The Black Parade Route continues during the Renaissance World Tour with the foundation directing $1 million toward luncheons during stops in London, Chicago, New York, Charlotte, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston, and New Orleans.
The Foundation will host luncheons the day before the concert to give entrepreneurs a 5-star, inspirational afternoon, with networking opportunities and the potential to be a grant recipient from $100k funds allocated to each luncheon. One thousand small businesses will be supported financially by a commitment totaling the $1 million donation.
The remaining $1 million will go toward the Renaissance Scholarship Fund, to be distributed to college and university students in ten cities along the tour, including Paris, Philadelphia, Detroit, and Washington, D.C. Each school will get $100,000 to award to their chosen recipients.
Additionally, BeyGOOD will continue its history of visiting local non-profit organizations by delivering surprises to chosen groups along the Renaissance World Tour, honoring their commitment of service to humanity. This begins in Stockholm, continues in Barcelona, Frankfurt, Warsaw, Toronto, Nashville, Minneapolis, St. Louis, Las Vegas, and Dallas. Local charities in every tour market will also be gifted with tickets to attend the show.
“We believe that everyone has the right to economic equity. And we are keenly aware of the barriers to access, opportunity, and resources that disproportionately impact BIPOC communities,” said Ivy McGregor, BeyGOOD Foundation’s Executive Director. “Our work is rooted in the belief that education, pathways for employment and support of entrepreneurship are vehicles that help drive sustainable outcomes. As we celebrate a decade of good, it continues to be my great honor to lead the philanthropic vision of Mrs. Carter and to be hands and feet of hope and help for those in need globally,”
Five People, Including 8-Year-Old Boy Killed In ‘Execution Style’ Shooting, Suspect Armed With AR-15 Remains On The Loose
Five people, including an 8-year-old boy, were killed in an “execution style” shooting at a Cleveland, Texas, home Friday night.
Police identified the suspect as Francisco Oropeza, 39, and he is not yet in custody. Police believe he fled the scene either on foot or on a bicycle and is still within a two-mile radius of the area. A judge has issued an arrest warrant for Oropeza and assigned a $5 million bond.
Police were called to a home at 11:31 p.m. on Friday for a call about harassment. When the San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office responded, officers located several victims between the ages of 8 and 40 years old.
ABC News reports that three victims were female, and two were male. Two of the female victims were discovered in a bedroom covering two surviving children. Three minors covered in blood were located at the home but not injured.
“In my opinion, they were actually trying to take care of the babies and keep them babies alive,” San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers told KTRK.
Authorities have not yet released any victims’ names but said they were all from Honduras. Capers said all the victims were shot “almost execution style” from the neck up.
Capers said ten people were in the house, but no one else was injured. About four or five residents had just moved in from Houston within the last week.
Police believe the shooting occurred after Oropeza got intoxicated and began shooting his AR-15 in the front yard of his residence. The neighbors asked him if he could stop because they had a baby trying to sleep.
Oropeza, who has a history of shooting guns in his yard, is armed with an AR-15. He is described as a Hispanic man, 5-foot-8, and last seen wearing jeans, a black shirt, and work boots. Investigators said he has short black hair and a goatee.
