It Took Colman Domingo Three Decades to Reach the Summit of Hollywood. Now What?
After years of grinding, Colman Domingo finally found his work validated with an Oscar nomination—and became the new king of red-carpet style. Now he’s ready to seize the career opportunities he’s been preparing for all his life
He appears, as ever, looking positively dripped out: white jacket, white pants, jaunty Louis Vuitton scarf, Rolex gleaming in the afternoon sun, fingers glistening with rings that would put a sultan to shame. Even on a relaxed day, Colman Domingo is guaranteed to be the best-dressed person walking into a room or, in this case, a 30-acre retail-space-cum-office-complex in Downtown Los Angeles.
“I’m from a generation of people where you have to tell your story a little bit,” Domingo, who is 54, says of his outfit. Casual, unintentional dressing—that’s “never been my style,” he says, gesturing toward the casual and unintentional around us. In addition to the sumptuous clothes, he has an easy laugh and speaks in a soft baritone that once caused NPR legend Terry Gross to pause mid-interview just to exclaim, “I love your voice.”

There was, however, a rare miss early in the season. I don’t remember it, and you probably don’t either, but there was one person who caught it: Oprah.
“She was like, ‘You look great. But what was that outfit you wore a few weeks ago? I depend on you. You never have an off day, but that was terrible,’ ” Domingo recalls. (He wouldn’t say which one it was, out of respect for the terrible fit maker, but I will say it may have involved yellow pants.)
Long before Domingo met Oprah on the set of Selma, his mother would write hopeful letters, telling the mogul about her struggling-actor son. “I lost my mother in 2006. And at the time, things were not where they are in my career now. I was bartending, doing small theater jobs,” he says. “I’m a spiritual person, I’m not a religious person, but everything that my mother had wished for me has come true. The people she wanted me to meet, to work with. And the biggest one was Oprah. It was like her North Star.”
Oprah may never have personally received those letters, but the gesture was significant. “It feels like a sacred union of friendship that was orchestrated by his mother,” Oprah tells me. “His mother saying, ‘See? I told you.’ ” Domingo and Oprah recently recorded an Audible version of one of Domingo’s plays, Wild With Happy; she plays Domingo’s mother, which felt like a full-circle moment.

RHOA: NeNe Leakes’ Ex-Landlord Attempting to Garnish ‘RHOA’ Alum’s Bank Account Over 5-Figure Debt
Former Real Housewives of Atlanta star NeNe Leakes’ former landlord is making moves in court to collect on a $25k judgment, In Touch can exclusively reveal.
According to court documents obtained by In Touch, the landlord, MPG-Sugarloaf, who was awarded the five-figure sum over alleged unpaid rent on NeNe’s now-closed Swagg Boutique, fired off a summons to Truist Bank.
The summons informed Truist of the debt NeNe, 56, owes. It instructed the bank, “to immediately hold all money, including wages, and other property, except what is known to be exempt, including property in safe deposit boxes or similar property that you hold, belonging to the Defendant named above beginning on the day of service of this summons and including the next five days.”
In the lawsuit, filed in August 2023, MPG-Sugarloaf claimed NeNe signed a lease in 2017. NeNe closed the store during the pandemic.
She reopened the boutique for a brief period before eventually closing it for good in 2022. The landlord said the reality star failed to pay $22k in rent after she vacated the location. NeNe commented on a social media post that referenced the lawsuit. The former RHOA star said her late husband Gregg had signed the lease.
She wrote, “Gregg signed the lease not me! He ain’t here.” NeNe’s husband died on September 1, 2021, following a battle with cancer. He was 66. Despite the landlord claiming NeNe was served with the legal paperwork at her $1 million Atlanta condo, the reality star failed to respond to the claims in court.
As a result, in November 2023, the judge granted a default judgment. He awarded the landlord the $22k in unpaid rent — with interest — for a grand total of $25,631. NeNe, was made her last appearance on RHOA in season 12 in 2020, has had a rough couple of years.
On top of her husband’s death, her son Bryson Bryant was arrested for possession of Fentanyl in 2023. He plead not guilty to the charges. His criminal case remains open.
In addition, NeNe recently called out her former friend Porsha Williams after she allegedly refused to work with her on a Netflix show.
“I was later told that Porsha did not show up and said that she did not want to work with me, that we had had issues from the past and she did not want to work with me,” NeNe said on social media. NeNe claimed she was “shocked” by Porsha’s behavior.

Jaguar II is the sequel to Monét’s 2020 EP, Jaguar. Earlier this month, the EP’s interlude, “We Might Even Be Falling in Love,” was certified gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) for selling over 500,000 equivalent units. It’s Monét’s second RIAA award as a lead artist and her third overall.
On June 27, Monét will be presented with the ASCAP Vanguard Award at the 2024 Rhythm & Soul Music Awards in Los Angeles.
“Victoria Monét has proven herself not only as an illuminating songwriter, but also as a flourishing artist and ASCAP member who continues to break barriers,” said Paul Williams, ASCAP board chair and president. “Her resilience, talent, and exemplary work ethic have helped her become a multi-award-winning singer and songwriter. On Tuesday (June 11), family, close associates, and former collaborators posted about the “Kater To Me” creator. Kayy’Jayy, Enchanting’s sister and the person who confirmed she was on life support amid the initial erroneous news of her death, shared a series of throwback pictures. “I love you, girl,” read one caption.
Enchanting’s alleged boyfriend, MotionGod Bandman, took to Facebook: “I love you [for life]. You knew wassup.” In a separate post, he added, “You finally found that peace that you was looking for you. Y’all hurt me bad.”
Meanwhile, Gucci sent his condolences on Instagram. “[I’m] so sad to have to say RIP to such a great young lady. A true star. We gon’ all miss you, Chant.” The trap pioneer’s wife, Keyshia Ka’oir Davis, also had some heartfelt words to say: “Leave my husband alone! He signs these [artists] to help them and give them a better life! I wish it wasn’t like this! Chant, we love you, baby girl!”

Enchanting was welcomed as a member of Gucci’s 1017 — his joint venture with Atlantic Records — in 2020 alongside artists like Pooh Shiesty, Big Scarr, Foogiano, and more. She subsequently appeared on the “Lemonade” musician’s So Icy Gang, Vol. 1 and So Icy Gang: The ReUp compilations.
2022 saw Enchanting release her major label debut, No Luv. It contained features from KenTheMan, Coi Leray, Scarr, Key Glock, and Hitkidd. Standout cuts like “Want Sum,” “O.P.P,” and the Kaliii-assisted “Track & Field” also saw success on streaming. The Fort Worth native followed the body of work with Luv Scarred / No Luv (Deluxe) in 2023.
“I went through a phase of doing absolutely everything. Like, I was a cheerleader. I was into sports at one point. I was doing hair at one point. I tried to do nails,” Enchanting told ESSENCE regarding how she got started in music. “I had a friend. He had a friend [who] owned a studio, and people knew that I could sing. I didn’t really start posting me singing ’til like later in high school.”
NBA legend Jerry West dies at age 86
Jerry West, the inspiration for the NBA's logo, died peacefully at his home at the age of 86, the Los Angeles Clippers announced Wednesday.
One of basketball's most accomplished contributors, West was a staple of the sport across eight decades, winning nine championships as a player, scout, coach, executive and consultant. He was an architect of the Los Angeles Lakers' 10 titles in the 1980s and 2000s and an adviser to the dynastic Golden State Warriors.
Long before West established himself as arguably the greatest general manager in NBA history, he was among the league's first superstars. A legend of West Virginia high school and college basketball and co-captain of the 1960 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team, West made the All-Star Game each season of a 14-year career decorated with 12 All-NBA selections and five All-Defensive appearances, all for the Lakers.
He won a single title in nine trips to the NBA Finals, heartbreakingly losing six title series to Bill Russell's Boston Celtics, and West's Finals MVP award in 1969 remains the only time the honor has been bestowed on a member of the losing team. He averaged 37.9 points per game in a seven-game loss to the Celtics.
“He took a loss harder than any player I’ve ever known,” late and legendary Lakers broadcaster Chick Hearn once said of West. “He would sit by himself and stare into space. A loss just ripped his guts out.”
A trailblazing scoring guard and relentless competitor, West was a deadly shooter before the advent of the 3-point line, and his most famous shot came in the form of a 60-foot buzzer beater that sent Game 3 of the 1970 Finals into overtime against the New York Knicks. He joined Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson as the league's first 25,000-point scorers. West averaged 27 points, 6.7 points and 5.8 rebounds for his career.
"Jerry West was a basketball genius and a defining figure in our league for more than 60 years," NBA commissioner Adam Silver said. "He distinguished himself not only as an NBA champion and an All-Star in all 14 of his playing seasons, but also as a consummate competitor who embraced the biggest moments. He was the league’s first Finals MVP and made rising to the occasion his signature quality."
The late Hot Rod Hundley once described his fellow West Virginian and Lakers teammate as "the greatest competitor I've ever seen. I don't care what you're playing, he wants to win. His nickname was 'Mr. Clutch,' and he carried that moniker well, because every time we were in that situation, boom, he'd make that shot."
West's pursuit of perfection led him to unprecedented success as a decision-maker in NBA front offices, twice winning Executive of the Year honors. First as a scout and then as GM, he helped construct the five-time champion "Showtime" Lakers of the 1980s. Before leaving the Lakers in 2000, West signed Shaquille O'Neal and traded for Kobe Bryant's draft rights, laying the foundation for another five titles from 2000-10.
West spent five seasons running the Memphis Grizzlies before retiring as a full-time shot-caller at the age of 69 in 2007. He joined the Golden State Warriors as an executive board member in 2011, famously opposing a would-be 2014 trade of Klay Thompson for Kevin Love and recruiting Kevin Durant in the 2016 offseason. West left the Warriors after the second of their four championships in 2017 and joined the L.A. Clippers in the same capacity, contributing to the recruitment of Kawhi Leonard and trade for Paul George in July 2019.
West will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in October as a contributor, making him the first person to be enshrined as both a player and a contributor. He was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.
“Obviously, a great icon for the basketball world,” Mavericks center Daniel Gafford said Wednesday at Dallas’ shootaround before Game 3 of the 2024 NBA Finals. “You know, never really just knew too much about him, but just knew what he meant to the game of basketball, and of course, he’s our logo — you know, we see him every day. Just rest in peace to him, and we’ll always be in remembrance of somebody that just had so much of an impact on the basketball world.”
West's personal life was not as charmed as his basketball career. The son of a West Virginia coal mine electrician, he endured a troubled childhood haunted by the 1951 death of his older brother in the Korean War. West served as a mental health advocate in his later years, sharing his lifelong battle with depression in a New York Times best-selling 2011 memoir titled, "West by West: My Charmed, Tormented Life."
"The greatest honor a man can have is the respect and friendship of his peers. You have that more than any man I know," Russell told The Forum crowd on "Jerry West Night" in 1972. "Jerry, you are, in every sense of the word, truly a champion. If I could have one wish granted, it would be that you would always be happy."
One of West's five children, Jerry, is currently a professional scout for the Detroit Pistons.
Stephen A. Smith To Back Off Following Backlash For Comments On Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock
During Monday’s (June 10) episode of The Stephen A. Smith Show, the ESPN anchor clarified his original comments before acknowledging the feedback he’s received from Will Smith supporters.
According to Stephen A., Will’s actions directly affected Will Packer, who produced the Oscars that year, and was the first Black producer to do so. He also believes Will’s film Emancipation was possibly snubbed the following year due to his behavior, with Stephen asserting director Antoine Fuqua may have missed out on a Best Director nomination.
“I was thinking about Black folks everywhere, aspiring to be in this business…and something like that happens, and it was a blemish on all of us,” he argued. “Because I know how much white America reveres Will Smith. And they’re thinking along the lines of, in my mind, ‘hell, if he did that, what would the rest of us do?’ That’s what I was thinking when I said what I said Friday about being torn.”
Stephen then added that he never discouraged the public from supporting Will, and acknowledged that the actor’s life has been “more good than bad.” He also shared that he received countless messages from Black fans of Will who wholeheartedly disagree with the notion that the actor “owes” the Black community anything.
“‘Who said he lost our support? He never lost it. We didn’t like what he did…but damn it, we love Will Smith and we forgive him,'” Stephen said while quoting those who’ve messaged him in Will’s defense. “‘You don’t hear Chris Rock talking about it, complaining about him. Eventually, they’ll meet and they’ll talk, Stephen A.’ We heard all of that. So, I got to stand down.”
During his original rant, Stephen A. alluded to the veteran actor’s resurgence of success, insisting he remains in debt to the Black community, mainstream acceptance aside.
“Somewhere along the way he has to sit down and talk to the Black community. You can see all the White people around Will Smith all you want to,” the Queens native added, referencing Caucasian fans’ seeming embrace of the former rap star in the wake of Bad Boys: Ride Or Die‘s seismic return at the box office. “Black folks have loved and revered this man for decades. He was the closest thing to perfection, as his friend Charlie Mac once told me.”
Stephen A. made it clear he had no intent to villianize Smith, but that he feels as if the Philadelphia native owes some sort of explanation or reasoning behind his actions on the night of the incident. “Everybody makes a mistake. This is not hatred. I love Will Smith still. But you gotta have a conversation as to why you did that.”
The ESPN First Take star also voiced his skepticism over if Smith would’ve assaulted a Caucasian comedian, a sentiment echoed by others while reacting to the moment. “We know you wouldn’t have smacked Ricky Gervais, Bill Maher, Bill Burr or a host of others,” Smith said.
“We know you wouldn’t have done that. No apology is necessary. I’m just saying a lot of folks ain’t get over that. A lot of folks find it hard to just go to the movies to watch you. I’m one of those people.”
Stephen A. concluded his message by acknowledging Smith’s talents, albeit while vowing not to watch his films until he properly atones for his actions.
“Will Smith, you’re phenomenal. Phenomenal talent, phenomenal actor, phenomenal individual, you lost your way one night,’ the New York Times bestseller said. “We need to hear that from you. I’m sorry. That’s what I need to do before I look forward to seeing your movies again, more than seeing a sit down.”

Chaka Khan Brings Classic Funk To NPR ‘Tiny Desk’
Chaka Khan proves why she wears the Queen of Funk crown on NPR’s Tiny Desk. The 71-year-old, accompanied by live instruments, delivered a handful of her catalog standouts in the just over 30-minute showcase.
Beginning with “Tell Me Something Good,” the Chicago native served up “What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me,” “Stay,” “Sweet Thing,” and more. She closes the set with “I’m Every Woman,” as the audience joyfully sings along.
The empowering track was the perfect anthem to end the Tiny Desk concert, as this showcase joins already-released performances from Tems, Lakecia Benjamin, and Tierra Whack in support of Black Music Month. The platform deliberately chose to highlight the talents and contributions of Black women across genres in the month-long celebration of art and culture.
With the aforementioned shows, audiences can still anticipate mini-concerts from Kierra Sheard, Me’Shell Ndegeoccello, Brittney Spencer, SWV, and Flo Mili.

Four Tops Singer Files Lawsuit Against Hospital For Racially Profiling And Deeming Him Delusional
On Monday (June 10), Alexander Morris, lead singer of the quartet, filed a complaint in Michigan federal court, which stems from a visit to the Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital’s emergency room in April 2023.
According to the filing, Morris and his representatives are accusing security and medical staff at the hospital with deeming him “deluded” upon revealing his “identity as a celebrity figure” while being treated for difficulty with breathing and chest pain.
“Plaintiff had a valid identification on his person and could easily have been identified as a singer in the Four Tops group,” attorneys for Morris’ told Billboard in a statement. “Defendant hospital… blatantly refused to provide plaintiff with medical treatment due to his race and/or perceived mental disability.”
Upon identifying himself as a public figure to medical staff, Morris was allegedly removed from oxygen support and set to undergo a psychological evaluation despite the singer showing “clear symptoms of cardiac distress.” Morris also claims that upon revealing his identity, a Caucasian security guard is alleged to have told the singer to “sit his Black a** down” before forcefully restraining him.
It wasn’t until Morris’ wife arrived at the hospital and showed a nurse footage of Morris performing alongside his groupmates at the Grammy Awards that the hospital called off the proposed psychiatric evaluation, with Morris insisting that his “health should’ve been first.”
The singer was later diagnosed with a heart infraction and discharged, with the hospital attempting to atone for their treatment of Morris by offering him a gift card, which he ultimately rejected. “Plaintiff was offered a $25.00 gift card to Meijers as an apology for the dehumanization and discrimination he faced at the hands of the hospital,” the crooner’s attorneys revealed. “He refused to accept the gift card.”
Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital has since released a statement seemingly addressing Morris’ allegations. The health, safety and well-being of our patients, associates and community members remains our top priority,” the spokesperson said.
“We remain committed to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion for all persons and the community. We do not condone racial discrimination of any kind.”
The Four Tops were founded in the 1950s as Four Aims, with original members Levi Stubbs, Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Renaldo “Obie” Benson and Lawrence Payton performing as a full unit for more than 40 years. Alexander Morris joined The Four Tops in 2019, the group’s most recent addition to it’s revamped lineup, which currently consists of one original member, Abdul “Duke” Fakir.

Kevin revealed in a new interview with Piers Morgan that he is now broke and his house is being sold at auction after being foreclosed on.
“I have to go back to Baltimore and put all my things in storage,” Kevin said. “I’m not quite sure where I’m going to live now… I can’t pay the bills that I owe.”
Kevin was asked if he’s filed for bankruptcy and he said, “There’s been a couple of times when I thought I was going to file, but we’ve managed to sort of dodge it, at least as of today.”
When asked how much money he currently has, Kevin said “none” and revealed that he owes “many millions” in legal fees.
“Well, you have some sense of legal bills. I still owe a lot of legal bills,” Kevin said.
Despite his financial hardships right now, Kevin does own up to his past behavior.
“I am absolutely 150 percent prepared to take accountability for those things that I did, the mistakes that I made, bad, bad, bad behavior sometimes,” he said.

A wild caught-on-camera punch after Brooklyn’s Pride Parade has yielded many online clicks but so far no police reports.
In a shocking video widely circulated on social media, a man later identified as investment banker Jonathan Kaye strikes a woman in the face so hard Saturday evening she reeled backward and fell down on the street.

Another person can be seen in the background of the video lying on the ground as two people offer assistance.
“This guy punched me in the face today and broke my nose and busted up my friend’s arm; can anyone find him?” the video was captioned.
“Oh my God,” a bystander says as Kaye walks away. “You’re an a–hole.”
“She f—–g threw s–t all over me,” Kaye, who appeared to have liquid on his jacket, replied.
“You’re a horrible person,” another man says to Kaye.
Kaye is listed on the website of Moelis & Co., a Manhattan investment bank, as a managing director who leads the global business services franchise. The bio says Kaye graduated from Duke University School of Law.
A woman who answered a number for Kaye said he wasn’t there and hung up on a reporter.
“We have become aware that one of our employees was involved in a serious incident in Brooklyn on June 8,” a Moelis spokesman said. “We take this matter very seriously and are conducting an investigation.”
Police say no one has come forward to file a report of the assault.
“The NYPD is aware of the video,” an NYPD spokesman said. “We encourage anyone who has been a victim to file a police report. There are currently no complaint reports on file.”

Winfrey, who revealed Tuesday that "Familiaris" by David Wroblewski is the latest selection for Oprah's Book Club, was forced to sit out an interview with Wroblewski on “CBS Mornings” due to a recent case of gastroenteritis. The digestive infection, caused by inflammation of the stomach and intestine, is characterized by symptoms including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea, according to Cleveland Clinic.
“Ms. Winfrey is recovering following a stomach virus and received an IV due to dehydration at the recommendation of her doctor,” a representative for Winfrey told USA TODAY in an emailed statement Tuesday. “She is resting and feeling better every day.”
Winfrey’s longtime friend and “CBS Mornings” co-host Gayle King opened up about the talk show icon’s “very serious” illness during her interview with Wroblewski.

Paisley Park responded in a statement shared on social media, explaining why they were not able to accommodate her.
“Hello Sheila – We love and respect you, and we did offer for you to come in and film in the soundstage or other areas, but we couldn’t allow filming in the studios without prior knowledge and planning, especially with tours going on at the time,” the statement read. “We hope to have you back to Paisley Park in the future — just give us a heads-up! Happy Prince Day.”
In a follow-up statement, Sheila E. said she would like her drum set – currently on load to Paisley Park, which now serves as a Prince museum – returned.

Prince died in April 2016 of an accidental overdose of the opioid fentanyl.

Tomlin is second in active wins with 173 regular-season victories, only behind Kansas City Chiefs Coach Andy Reid. With 11 playoff appearances and a Super Bowl championship under his belt, Tomlin has proven his worth. As the third coach in the last 55 years, the Rooney family’s loyalty is evident in their commitment to him.
“Mike Tomlin’s leadership and commitment to the Steelers have been pivotal to our success during his first 17 years as head coach,” Rooney said in a statement.
After a 10-7 finish to the season, while dealing with quarterback controversy all year, it was evident that Tomlin garnered success and deserved to keep coaching in Pittsburgh if he wanted to.

A federal jury convicted Hunter Biden of federal gun charges, a historic first for the offspring of a sitting president, after a trial featuring wrenching emotional testimony about his drug use from his ex-wife and sister-in-law.
President Joe Biden's son faces up to 25 years in prison for three charges − lying on a federal screening form about his drug use, lying to a gun dealer and possessing the gun − although first-time, nonviolent offenders typically get shorter sentences.
The 54-year old businessman and attorney's case came after a plea deal fell apart in July 2023 that could have resolved gun and taxes charges without prison time. Hunter Biden still faces another federal trial starting Sept. 5 in California for allegedly avoiding taxes.
Hunter Biden in a statement following the verdict said he was "disappointed by the outcome" but "grateful" for his family and loved ones. Biden's criminal charges coincide with his father campaigning for reelection.
