#MAGFAB: Sterling L Brown for Ebony Magazine April 2025 The Ultimate Gentlemen Issue

What makes the ultimate gentleman? It’s the finesse and coolness that Black men possess. It’s how we move through the world with fervent command of ancestral strength, setting the tone while others listen and seek to emulate our energy. Collectively defined and individually unique, it’s never duplicated but emanates outward into the lives we touch with the hope that it will live on in legacy.
Sterling K. Brown is this definition personified. On the day of his April 2025 EBONY cover shoot, his presence fills the room and pulls focus even before he utters a word. Inside the sleek Culver City Smashbox Studio, the smooth sounds of a Motown Soul mix wafted from the speakers. The set’s photographer, Birdie Thompson, noted of the actor, “He doesn’t have to beat his chest… But the confidence is there. Always.”

The crew would go on to echo her sentiments, adding words like charming, disarming, grounded – all undeniable aspects of someone who’s earned the title of being “The Ultimate Gentleman.”
There was no dramatic entrance. No entourage parade. Just a simple hello, paired with direct eye contact and a firm handshake for crew members, or a hug for more familiar faces. His presence pulled focus—not by volume, but by vibration.
“I try to have every interaction be a holy interaction,” Brown tells me early into our conversation. “Namaste, as I understand it, means ‘the God in me sees the God in you.’ That’s how I try to live.”
Brown doesn’t just model the clothes. He commands every outfit through exaggerated posture, striking in contrast to his relaxed demeanor. It becomes crystal clear: Brown is a maestro in motion. And all on the eve of his 49th birthday.

Starting his career in the early 2000s, he appeared on several television shows, including Army Wives from 2007 through 2013. Three years later, he would change the face of primetime television on NBC’s groundbreaking series This Is Us. Brown starred as Randall Pearson, a son adopted into a loving white family, who spent his early years yearning to establish his identity as a Black man and then define himself as a husband and father while finally learning about his own roots. Randall was a man who expressed himself freely: we witnessed his joy and sadness, we saw him navigate anger and anxiety, we felt him grieve, and watched him heal and find salvation. In Brown’s capable hands, he was more than just the provider or protector, or, showcasing the multitude of emotions that often exist within the Black male experience, even when we haven’t been allowed to show it.
In real life, Brown’s approach to manhood and fatherhood is heavily influenced by the man he still calls his hero—his father, Sterling Brown Jr., who passed when Brown was just ten.
“My dad cried. He wasn’t stoic,” Brown reveals with a smile. “That level of affection—that’s what I pass down to my boys.”
For Brown’s father to have left him with such an indelible impression of what it means to be a man at such a young age, it’s no surprise he’s been able to translate that into his life and extensive acting career. From The People v. O.J. Simpson to his popular binge-worthy series Paradise, these complex human emotions are displayed fiercely through Brown’s artistry from episode to episode.

But off-screen? That emotional accessibility isn’t an act; it extends into his 19-year marriage with actress Ryan Michelle Bathe. With divisive commentary on relationships within the Black community, their marriage has become a modern model for Black love. The two now co-host their podcast, We Don’t Always Agree, which was born out of the writers’ strike and a desire to speak honestly about the work that goes into relationships and longevity. It’s a raw, witty and heartfelt look into their union. “People see us on the red carpet and think, ‘goals.’ But chile, please… it takes work. We want to be honest about that,” Brown declared.
Part of that honesty includes the grace they’ve learned to give each other. “You’re not always going to be right. The key is choosing kindness,” he says. “We used to let things linger. Now we apologize faster. We laugh more. We keep choosing each other.”
The way in which Brown speaks of his wife touches on a conversation that’s taken place across the Black communal zeitgeist recently: how does it feel to love a Black woman? But it begs an even bigger question: whether platonically or romantically, do we as Black men affirm our Black women enough?
“Do we affirm Black women enough? No. We need to do better,” Brown says plainly. Granted this sentiment may be a behemoth, but the care and thoughtfulness Brown takes to answer further cements why he’s regarded as being such a gentleman.
“I don’t know exactly what is required for that evolution to progress forward in a way other than [having] grace. It’s not a competition; it’s a coalition. I would love to see us be able to work side by side more and more as time goes on. Love is not merely a feeling. Love is a choice. Who you choose to love says something, whether you want it to or not. Loving a Black woman is one of the most powerful statements that you can make to affirm them. And I’ll leave it at that.”

When asked how he feels about being widely respected for how he maneuvers through his experience as a Black man, Brown doesn’t wear it as a badge of pride—but as a reflection of something deeper. “If I’m receiving gentleman status, then I hope it’s because I’m trying to share my source with whomever I come in contact with.” In a world often driven by bravado, Brown redefines masculinity on his own terms—anchored in vulnerability, authenticity and emotional fluency.
“There’s only one me,” he says with firm humility. “So, don’t worry about how anybody else does it. You are a man. You are in touch with the masculine and feminine sensibilities that exist within yourself. And sharing all of that… that’s sharing yourself in the most authentic way possible.”
It’s another philosophy he’s passing on to his sons, aged 13 and nine. In the Brown household, speaking one’s truth isn’t just allowed—it’s encouraged. “Your voice means something,” he says. “Whether you’re talking to your peers or to adults, speak your mind, you matter.”
It’s this command of leadership that makes him the quintessential leading man. In his latest series Paradise, created by This Is Us’ Dan Fogelman, Brown plays Xavier Collins, a widowed Secret Service agent protecting the President while quietly navigating his own grief. “I didn’t want to repeat myself,” he says, referring to his acclaimed role on This Is Us. “Xavier is different. He’s guarded. Still in mourning. Still questioning if he’s allowed to be happy.”

He isn’t just taking up space on screen with Paradise. As both star and executive producer, he is stepping more deeply into leadership. “I used to shy away from being number one on the call sheet. But now I know God gives you what you need when you need it. My style is about creating a space where everyone feels heard and where people feel free to play… whatever I can do to make sure everybody knows that they are welcome, that whatever they have to say in terms of input is appreciated.”
As Brown defines his place as a leader, he’s also making sure there’s enough room for the next generation to take up their space. “I have things of value to share in terms of my experiences for younger actors to help them feel settled and at ease and ready to play. ‘Cause that’s all it is, man, you’re trying to free up this magical space where you memorize lines and then you have these conversations and hopefully something spontaneous takes place,” he shared. “Sometimes you need permission to do that. I feel like I’m in a place where I’m able to help people be as fully available as possible.”
In essence, Brown is creating opportunities for others to shine their brightest. It’s a marker that he’s not one to steal the spotlight but is gracious enough to share it. Get more at Ebony! https://www.ebony.com/sterling-k-brown-cover-story-april-2025/
#RHOA: Question:Could RHOA Suffer the Same Fate As RHONY?
To get a sense of what ails this season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, watch the eighth episode, where the Housewives find themselves in Nashville to celebrate Porsha Williams’s birthday. The trip is intended to cement Porsha’s fêted return to the franchise that brought her success, as she holds court in front of a new cast with her patented mix of raunch and humor. But that doesn’t quite happen. In an attempt to punish new castmate Angela Oakley for bringing an uninvited guest, Porsha stonewalls Angela throughout her celebratory dinner, resorting to curt, one-word answers whenever prodded by the group to participate. The rest of the cast refuse to ignore Angela, however, leaving Porsha to publicly sulk. Porsha’s behavior is a classic Housewife tactic: To cut someone down to size, you can simply refuse to interact with them in the hopes that it will ultimately eliminate their camera time. It is also, in a metaphorical sense, the perfect encapsulation of the series’ woes — the old guard of Housewives is preventing the newer crop from thriving.
For much of the Real Housewives franchises’ run, Atlanta has been the preeminent standout, making television magic out of foibles as minor as being excluded from a party’s RSVP list, as happened between NeNe Leakes and Shereé Whitfield in season one. NeNe’s penchant for extravagant reactions made any interaction immediately memorable, and the subsequent seasons introduced formidable adversaries for her magnetic persona: Kandi Burruss on season two, Phaedra Parks on season three (alongside Cynthia Bailey), and Kenya Moore and Porsha Williams on season five. All the women listed have — in some fashion or another — left their stamp on the franchise, with a bevy of memeable reactions in the archives for long-standing Housewives acolytes that have become a digital vocabulary on their own — from NeNe gasping at Kenya Moore’s white refrigerator to Kandi dramatically exclaiming, “The lies! The lies! The lies!” on the Housewives reunion couch in season nine.
We are now 16 seasons in, and while most of the women from the “golden” era of Atlanta have since departed, dialogue about their legacy and impact has yet to abate, despite the show’s attempt to transition RHOA into its next era of reality stars. NeNe has not been on an NBCUniversal screen since the infamous laptop closure of the season-12 reunion; Phaedra had an informal ban from the franchise since her notorious fallout with Kandi during the season-nine reunion when she revealed that she was the one who claimed Kandi and her husband were drugging women and taking advantage of them; Kandi decided that her time on the franchise was up and has moved on to producing Broadway shows. Kenya and Porsha are the only two “classic era” Atlanta Housewives who have appeared this season, and both have run into multiple unexpected hiccups. Kenya was unceremoniously suspended after an attempt at humiliating a co-worker on-camera led to her presenting explicit photos of new Housewife Brit Eady during her long-awaited salon opening, while Porsha’s ongoing legal fight with her estranged husband has limited her filming opportunities to her mother’s house and prevented her from talking at length about her divorce.
In their stead lay a new crop of potential Housewives: Brit, a retired video vixen turned businesswoman of all trades; Shamea Morton, a delightfully quirky friend of the show turned full-time Housewife, whose promotion is long overdue; the aforementioned Angela Oakley, wife of infamously gruff NBA legend Charles Oakley, who has showcased her own ability to cut to the quick when confronted with rumors that her husband has been unfaithful; and pint-size restaurateur Kelli Ferrell, whose flair for the dramatic has led to three explosive events to date. These women are dynamic and compelling in their own right, but unfortunately, their arrival hasn’t stopped fans from waxing nostalgic about Kenya, NeNe, and Phaedra.
The economy of fan attention is crucial in any Housewive’s future; her ability to develop and establish a fan base that is eager to see her coming and goings is pivotal to a Housewife’s success. Housewives as a franchise relies on audience enthusiasm and participation. When dramatic events take place, it is the reactions on podcasts, X, and Reddit that are screencapped and integrated into the show to give it a sense of linear clarity, re-creating the fervor as if it happened in real time. Real Housewives producer Andy Cohen is long familiar with the fan base’s loyalty to titans of the franchise — there is a recurring bit on his show Watch What Happens Live known as “Bring Back That Wife” where guests can make the case for departed cast members to make a glorious return.
But nostalgia can be blinding; Atlanta’s golden era still had its flaws. Linnethia Leakes’s natural charm and charisma doesn’t outdo the simple fact that she was reportedly incorrigible to work with near the end of her reality tenure and made the experience miserable for castmates and viewers alike; Phaedra’s season-nine lie about Kandi and her husband led to one of the darkest moments in Atlanta franchise history (which she still denies culpability for). Kenya Moore continues to fan the flames of fan opposition as she promotes a #JusticeForKenya hashtag on Instagram, answering fan questions about her ousting on her YouTube page with a retaliatory confessionals video sitting at nearly 500,000 views. But Kenya and her fans’ furious claims that there’s a “double standard” over Kenya’s suspension overlook her affinity for haranguing reality-television novices, which Tanya Sam, Kim Fields, and Porsha can all attest to.
A viewership focused on reminiscing is also one that is unable to actively participate in the narrative progression of its favorite series. The ratings for Atlanta also seem to be continually declining, with TV-viewership numbers for the April 27 episode reaching a series low. The current hiatus of the reboot of Real Housewives of New York is a harbinger of how such fan nostalgia can become a self-fulfilling prophecy: In November 2024, Cohen pleaded with fans to see through the vision of the rebooted Real Housewives of New York, claiming that “there are a lot of interesting personal stories with the women in the new ‘New York’” in response to criticism from fans and former Housewives about the new cast and panic over wobbling ratings. A few months later, Jon Hamm doubled down on the fan reaction, demanding the return of the classic New York Housewives in February despite the fact that half of that roster — including Bethenny Frankel, Jill Zarin, and Sonja Morgan — have since semi-retired and moved to Florida full-time. As of May 9, the show is reportedly on indefinite hiatus, unable to go back to its older cast or configure a new one that will appease fan discontent.
In short, Atlanta, like Marvel, is at risk of becoming a victim of its own culture-defining IP, and absent some rapid course correction, we are quickly approaching the moment where Robert Downey Jr. reveals himself as playing yet another character in the massive franchise. There’s a world where Kenya, Porsha, and Phaedra don’t even appear on cameras this season beyond brief guest roles to encourage the transition to the new era, allowing Angela, Shamea, and Drew Sidora’s compelling stories of marriage, rebuilding, and self-discovery to flourish as the focal point of Atlanta’s next era — women with a strong sense of comedic timing and natural penchant for dramatics and delusion, qualities that have long been the secret sauce for any iconic Housewife.
A clip from episode nine of the season highlights the newcomers’ potential: In an all-cast scene, Angela and Brit quickly devolve into a war of words that has been prompted by repeated miscommunications. “Do you not read the words coming out of my mouth?” Brit snarks, gesturing mockingly at her lips. Angela made no bones of cutting her to the quick. “That big-ass mouth, I should be able to read it,” Angela retorts. “You got miles on your mouth. Brit, you are a whore!” Just like that, we have a new meme to add to the lexicon, riddled with the bawdiness and impeccable timing that makes Atlanta sing.
We are halfway through the season. Atlanta’s new Housewives are coming with their own fashions, plenty of drama, and story lines of their very own. Let’s make a collective agreement to stop speculating on alternate realities and begin to see our way toward the Atlanta of tomorrow.

#HipHopNews: Tory Lanez Is "Pulling Through" After Being Stabbed 14 Times, His Team Confirms
Tory Lanez is recovering after being stabbed 14 times, his team confirmed in an update Monday (May 12) night. Earlier that day, news surfaced that he had been rushed from Tehachapi’s California Correctional Institution to a nearby hospital in Bakersfield after an altercation with another inmate. According to his representatives, the Chixtape 5 creator is thankfully "pulling through."
A post on Lanez’s Instagram detailed his injuries, including seven stab wounds to his back, four to his torso, one to the "left side of his face," and most concerningly, two to the back of his head. "Both of his lungs collapsed, and he was placed on a breathing apparatus," the statement read.
“Despite being in pain, he is talking normally, in good spirits and deeply thankful to God that he is pulling through,” the post went on to say. “He also wants to thank everyone for their continued prayers and support.”
Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesperson Pedro Calderon Michel confirmed to AP News that the incident took place around 7:20 a.m. PT. Prison staff “immediately gave Lanez medical aid and called 911.” The Kern County District Attorney’s Office is currently investigating.
As polarizing as Lanez is after shooting Megan Thee Stallion in the foot, much of social media was either celebrating or sending him well-wishes. Regardless of which side you land on, being stabbed in jail is admittedly an unfortunate situation.
Lanez started his 10-year prison sentence in 2023, though a judge granted him a 305-day credit for the time he spent under house arrest. He was convicted of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, discharging a firearm with gross negligence and carrying a loaded, unregistered gun in a vehicle stemming from the Los Angeles incident three years prior.
With all that being said, Lanez's time behind bars hasn't exactly been smooth sailing. Most notably, the Canadian hitmaker was accused of harassing and encouraging others to cyberbully Megan from jail. In April, the “Bigger In Texas” rapper’s legal team deposed him in connection to her lawsuit involving YouTuber and blogger Milagro Cooper.
Male Sex Worker Claims Diddy “Directed” Sex Between Him And Cassie, Testifies To Seeing Abuse

Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sex trafficking trial is underway in New York City, with day one featuring opening statements and testimony from the hotel security guard who was on-duty the day Combs was recorded assaulting Cassie in 2016.
The day’s second witness came in Daniel Philip, who previously worked as a male escort and claims he was paid “a few thousand dollars” in 2012 or 2013 to have sex with R&B singer Cassie as former boyfriend Combs watched.
Philip claims he was “expecting to do a strip tease and leave” with $200 and a tip, but was offered thousands by the singer for full intercourse as Puff observed and masturbated, NBC News reports.
“At that point she gave me a few thousand dollars and said she would tip me when I leave,” Phillip told jurors. “We ended up having sex, rubbed baby oil on each other for a couple minutes. He (Combs) was sitting in a corner masturbating.” After the session, he claims Cassie gave him “a couple of thousand more.”
“He started really directing us after the second time,” Philip testified of Combs’ demands while watching him and Cassie have sex, which he claims included telling him when and where to ejaculate, role play scenarios, and various sex acts he wanted to see on-demand. Diddy would also occasionally stop them so that he could have sex with Ventura, Philip added. He also claims that Puff offered him drugs, but that he never partook. He did, however, recall once seeing Cassie and believing that she might have been under the influence of drugs.
“Combs opened the door, he said ‘I don’t think this is going to happen today,'” Phillip said. “She looked like she was completely passed out, half on the couch and half off the couch.”
Philip added that he once witnessed Combs abuse Cassie after she didn’t rush to him when he called her name from another room.
“Combs came out of the room and I saw a liquor bottle fly past her and hit the wall,” he told jurors. “He grabbed her by her hair and dragged her by the hair into the bedroom. She was screaming and he pulled her into the bedroom. And what I heard sounded like him slapping her.”
Cassie then apologized to Diddy, Philip testified, claiming Puff’s response was, “‘B—- when I tell you to come, you come now, not later.'”
He added that he also heard Diddy abuse Cassie on a separate occasion while the couple was in a bedroom at the Essex Hotel. “I heard her yelling, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry,’ someone was being slapped around and slammed around the room,” Phillip said. “And I looked around the corner and I saw Mr. Combs walk out of the hotel altogether without clothes, he might have had a towel on.”
“Shocked” and “terrified” by what he witnessed, Philip says he told Cassie to seek help after she attempted to downplay Puff’s abuse.
“She basically tried to convince me that ‘it’s OK’ and ‘I’ll be OK,'” Phillip said. “And I said, ‘It is not OK and you need to get help.'”
Taraji P. Henson Channels Single Mom Struggles in Tyler Perry’s New Thriller ‘Straw’
*Taraji P. Henson takes on one of her most emotionally charged roles yet in “Straw,” Tyler Perry’s upcoming Netflix thriller that follows a single mother caught in an escalating storm of injustice, desperation, and impossible choices.
In “Straw,” Henson plays Janiyah, a mother just trying to get through another day while caring for her sick daughter. But what begins as a routine errand to cash a check spirals into a catastrophic ordeal when she’s wrongly accused of attempting a bank robbery. “All she’s trying to do is cash her check and pay for her daughter’s lunch,” Henson told Entertainment Weekly. “If you’re a struggling single mother, you can’t always afford that regular lunch… and kids start teasing your kid. As parents, we feel our children’s pain deeper than them.”
The official synopsis sets the tone for the emotional and societal weight of the story: A single mother’s world unravels in chaos as her day goes from bad to worse to catastrophic while she struggles to care for her ill daughter. Pushed to the brink by a world that seems indifferent to her existence, she’s forced to confront impossible choices in a society that offers her no safety net.
Filmed in just four days, the production matched the intensity of the narrative. Henson managed to juggle this demanding shoot while still working on her Peacock limited series, “Fight Night.”
“That’s what I like about Tyler Perry, he’s fast, and I can be fast too,” she said. “He knew he had a limited amount of time with me. He used it wisely.”
The cast of “Straw” is a powerhouse ensemble featuring Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Glynn Turman, Sinbad, and Rockmond Dunbar.
“This one is a thriller, and I’ve never done a thriller with Tyler,” Henson said. “There’s a twist that happens that you don’t see coming — a whodunnit, in a sense. I can’t give away too much, so I’m trying to talk around it, but there’s some crazy twists and turns in there that’ll take you by surprise, that absolutely take the character by surprise.”
The film explores not only personal hardship but also “showcases how easy it is for people in a vulnerable position to be disregarded or disenfranchised by a system that is supposed to protect them,” Henson explained. “This woman is just trying to make it through her day and take care of her child by herself, with all the odds stacked against her. I’ve been there before.”
Reflecting on her past, Henson shared that it wasn’t difficult to relate to her character’s struggles. “I remember when all I could afford was Hamburger Helper,” she said. “And my son… to this day, will not eat oatmeal or Malt-O-Meal because that was the subsidized food you could get on the WIC checks.”
Though the shoot was brief, the emotional intensity was lasting. “The subject matter is a bit dark, so I was happy to only live in this character’s world for four days, because that energy is transferable, and it kind of sticks with you,” she said. “So I was happy to get in and get out real quick. And it was very different from any other character I’ve ever played.”
“Straw” will be available for streaming on Netflix starting June 6.
John Legend Believes Donda West’s Death Could Be Cause Of Ye’s “Devolution”

Grammy-winning artist John Legend opened up about the troubling transformation of longtime collaborator and friend Kanye West in a candid interview with The London Times published on Saturday (May 10).
Legend, who rose to prominence alongside West during the early 2000s, reflected on the stark contrast between the man he first met and the one who now frequently makes headlines for his controversial and inflammatory views.
“Kanye was very passionate, very gifted, and he had big dreams not only for himself but also for all the people around him,” said Legend in the interview. “He had so much optimism, so much creativity. It does feel sad, sometimes shocking, to see where he is now.
Legend recalled the breakthrough moment when West’s debut album The College Dropout changed everything for their circle.
“Then The College Dropout sold 400,000 copies in its first week, everyone wanted to know what was happening in our camp, and all those people who turned me down suddenly decided that my music sounded a lot better than it did the first time round,” he said.
But despite the triumphs, Legend admits he never foresaw the dramatic behavioral changes that would follow.
“I didn’t see a hint of what we’re seeing now, his obsessions with antisemitism, anti-blackness, and it is sad to see his devolution,” Legend said, referencing the disturbing rhetoric and actions that have alienated West from much of the industry and the public.
Legend stopped short of offering a clinical diagnosis, but suggested that a pivotal life event may have sparked the shift.
“I don’t think we’re qualified to psychoanalyze him, but after his mother passed in 2007, there was definitely a difference. His descent started then and seems to have accelerated recently.”
The emotional weight of Donda West’s passing, combined with the pressures of fame, may have played a profound role in shaping Kanye’s current reality—a possibility that adds layers of tragedy to an already complex figure.

In addition Beyond The Gates is beating its timeslot competitor ABC's General Hospital by 7% in the key demographic of women 25-54.
CBS officially describes Beyond the Gates as a soap opera that is "set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States; a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those who live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have “made it” and those who haven’t are all trying to navigate life … and some with more grace than others."
Beyond The Gates is developed and produced by CBS Studios and the NAACP in partnership with P&G Studios a division of Procter and Gamble. The series is the groundbreaking first hour-long black soap opera to premiere in daytime. The creation is the brainchild of award-winning showrunner Michele Val Jean, in association with executive producer Sheila Ducksworth, and is the first new soap opera to premiere since NBC debuted Passions back in 1999.
Beyond The Gates airs weekdays at 2 p.m. EST on CBS and streamed daily on Paramount Plus.
Kimora Lee Simmons Is Returning ‘Back To The Fab Lane’ With Newly Revived Reality Show
One of fashion’s biggest “it girls” is returning to the reality TV world. Kimora Lee Simmons — model, entrepreneur, and founder of Baby Phat — is bringing her fans back into her glamorous world by way of Kimora: Back In The Fab Lane. It has been over a decade since her original hit E! series Kimora: Life In The Fab Lane ended, making the new iteration a highly anticipated project that will document her lifestyle changes since she was last featured on air.
Set to premiere in December 2025, the release will be an upgraded version of the beloved 2000s series, where she showed the realities of juggling her career, family, and staying true to her signature fabulous lifestyle.
“The show will follow the now single mom of five as she commands a billion-dollar empire while running her iconic Baby Phat brand,” reads the description. “Between dealing with the whims of her top-model daughters Ming, 25, and Aoki, 22, cheering on her 13-year-old son Kenzo and 15-year-old son Gary during championship games and celebrating her own major milestones with her youngest Wolfe, 10, Kimora’s world is even more fabulous and outrageous than ever before.”
Kimora Lee Simmons began modeling for Chanel and working under the tutelage of Chanel’s then designer, the late Karl Lagerfeld, at just 13 years old. She went on to achieve success in the high fashion modeling world, walking for brands like Fendi, Valentino, Emanuel Ungaro, and Yves Saint Laurent and being featured on the covers of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
In 1999, she launched Baby Phat, an off-shoot of the men’s streetwear line Phat Farm. The trendsetting label achieved cultural and monetary success, and at one point was estimated to be worth over $1 billion. She revived the brand in 2019.
The St. Louis native was married to Russell Simmons from 1998-2009 and got remarried to Tim Leissner in 2014. The 50-year-old has five kids: sons Kenzo, Gary, and Wolfe, plus daughters Aoki and Ming. Watch a trailer from the original Kimora series above.

Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour shatters earnings records

Beyoncé has started her ‘Cowboy Carter Tour’ with a record setting $55.7 million gross. This impressive financial achievement solidifies her position as one of the most commercially successful touring artists in the music industry.
The ‘Crazy In Love’ hitmaker finished a run of five gigs at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California on May 9, pulled in well over $50 million with 217,000 tickets sold. The immense popularity of her latest country-inspired album has translated into extraordinary demand for live performances.
As reported by Rolling Stone magazine, the Los Angeles run is the “biggest reported single-venue engagement” of the year so far. This achievement comes amid a highly competitive concert market, with numerous major artists currently on tour.
It’s also the fifth-highest grossing tour stop in Boxscore history, beaten only by U2 at the Sphere in Las Vegas across 2023 and 2024, Harry Styles at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 2022, and Take That’s Wembley Stadium run in 2011. These rankings demonstrate the exceptional commercial power of Beyoncé’s current tour.
It’s also the highest-grossing single-venue engagement in history by a female artist. This milestone breaks yet another glass ceiling in the touring industry, setting a new benchmark for female performers worldwide.
Beyoncé started her tour on April 28 and returned to the venue on May 1, 4, 7 and 9, pulling in an average of $11.1 million per night with over 43,000 fans in attendance for each show. The consistent high attendance reflects the unwavering loyalty of her fanbase and the broad appeal of her latest musical direction.
With three performances as SoFi in 2023, her eight gigs in total is more than any other artist in the venue’s five-year history. This achievement adds to her long list of venue records throughout her illustrious career.
On the opening night of the SoFi run, the Grammy Award winner was joined onstage by her daughters Blue Ivy Carter and Rumi Carter. The family moment became an instant highlight of the tour, garnering widespread media attention.
Blue Ivy, 13, danced with her famous mother during her performance of ‘America Has A Problem’. The teenager has become increasingly involved in her mother’s creative projects, developing her own artistic identity.
Later on, it was time for Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s seven-year-old, Rumi Carter, to make her onstage debut. This marked a significant milestone for the younger Carter daughter, who had previously remained largely out of the public spotlight.
As Beyoncé belted out the moving ballad ‘Protector’, Rumi and her big sister stood with her under the spotlight. The poignant performance highlighted themes of motherhood and family that run through much of Beyoncé’s recent work.
Following the performance, pictures of Beyoncé and her three children – also including Rumi’s twin brother Sir – appeared on a big screen behind her. The visual tribute emphasized the importance of family in the artist’s life and creative expression.
Blue Ivy was part of the backup dance troupe for her superstar mom on her 2023 ‘Renaissance Tour’. Her participation in that groundbreaking tour received critical acclaim, with many noting her natural stage presence.
She also joined her mother onstage for her NFL Christmas Day Halftime Show in 2024. The high-profile performance further established the mother-daughter creative partnership that has become a recurring element in Beyoncé’s recent performances.
The talented teenager has followed in her famous parents’ footsteps and voiced Kiara in the 2024 Disney film ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’. This voice acting role builds upon her creative portfolio, which already includes Grammy recognition.
The ‘Cowboy Carter Tour‘ continues Beyoncé’s tradition of pushing artistic boundaries while achieving commercial success. Her venture into country music with the album represents a significant creative risk that has clearly resonated with audiences across diverse demographics. The tour’s production features elaborate staging, costume changes, and theatrical elements that have become hallmarks of Beyoncé’s live performances.
Industry experts predict the tour will likely continue breaking records as it progresses across North America and potentially international venues. The exceptional start in Los Angeles sets a promising trajectory for what may become one of the highest-grossing tours in music history.
The combination of Beyoncé’s artistic evolution and her inclusion of family members on stage has created a tour experience that goes beyond typical concert performances. Fans have praised both the musical arrangements of her country-influenced songs and the emotional depth of the family moments woven throughout the shows.

#RIPJohnEdwards, Last Remaining Star of the Legendary Spinners, R&B Greats

John Edwards, the R&B singer who rose to stardom with The Spinners, has died after a long illness.
Edwards joined The Spinners in 1977, after their sensation run on Atlantic Records with lead singer Phillippe Wynne. Everyone thought that without Wynne, the group was done. But they were wrong.
With Edwards singing lead, the group had two smashes — a cover of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons’ “Working My Way Back to You,” and Sam Cooke’s “Cupid.”
It’s fair to say those two covers, which went top 10, were as popular as the Spinners run of hits a few years earlier including “Could it Be I’m Falling in Love” and “I’ll Be Around.”
The Spinners had such a long and successful career it’s hard to imagine they weren’t inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame until 2023. Jann Wenner didn’t want them, but every year the late Seymour Stein fought for them.
Edwards was 80, and had a long career before he even joined the group. His voice will be heard forever.
The world of classic R&B shrinks a little more.

New Documentary ‘TRAPPED: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams?’ Investigates Guardianship Controversy and #FreeWendy

Investigation Discovery and Telepictures have teamed up with EXTRA for a powerful new one-hour special, “TRAPPED: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams?” set to premiere Monday, May 19, at 8/7c on ID. The special will also be available to stream on Max.
Per the news release, the documentary dives deep into the growing #FreeWendy movement, a campaign led by fans and advocates demanding the release of iconic media personality Wendy Williams from the guardianship she’s been under since 2022. This special marks the first collaboration between ID, Warner Bros. Television Group’s Telepictures, and EXTRA.
Williams, a trailblazer in radio and daytime TV, rose to fame through her outspoken style and massive cultural impact. But following the end of “The Wendy Williams Show” and public concerns about her health, Williams was placed under legal guardianship, later revealed to be connected to her diagnoses of frontotemporal dementia and aphasia. Since then, questions have mounted about her autonomy and well-being.
TRAPPED explores the events that led to this legal arrangement and sheds light on the public and private battles surrounding it. Through in-depth interviews with journalists who covered Williams’ career, medical and legal experts, and rare archival footage from EXTRA’s archives, the film provides a layered and emotional look at Williams’ rise and the complexities of her current situation.
Among the most compelling voices in the special is Yazmin Ramos, former Senior Producer of “The Wendy Williams Show.” Having worked alongside Williams for 12 years, Ramos offers personal insight into the woman behind the headlines. The documentary also includes footage from on-the-ground #FreeWendy advocates demanding transparency and change.
“TRAPPED: What Is Happening to Wendy Williams?” is produced for Investigation Discovery by Telepictures, in association with Warner Bros. Unscripted Television. EXTRA’s Jeremy Spiegel and Theresa Coffino serve as executive producers, with Matt Ferrell as co-executive producer and Alex Castino as senior supervising producer.

Halle Berry Reveals She Had to Change Cannes 2025 Opening Ceremony Look Due to New Dress Code Rules
The Cannes Jury has arrived for the opening ceremony! Jurors Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, Alba Rohrwacher, Dieudo Hamadi, Payal Kapadia, Leïla Slimani and Carlos Reygadas, along with Jury President Juliette Binoche, arrived for the event, which also served as the screening for Partir Un Jour on Tuesday (May 13) in Cannes, France.

Earlier that day, Halle said her opening ceremony dress was nixed due to the new dress code rules!
“I had an amazing dress by Gupta that I cannot wear tonight because it’s too big of a train,” Halle said (via Variety). “I’m not going to break the rules. The nudity part is also probably a good rule.” Cannes did ban long, voluminous looks, as well as nudity.

Lizzo Fires Back at Critics Who Say She’s ‘Skinny Now’: ‘Baby, I’m Big’

A slimmed-down Lizzo joined The Breakfast Club on Monday (May 12), and the “Truth Hurts” singer opened up about her “weight release” process, which began with cleansing her mind and clearing out the negative energy from her life.
“I think I had to start with cleaning out my mind and my energy and clearing out all of the negativity around me. And I feel like I released so much I was holding on,” she said. “I do call it a weight release because [when] it started, I got snatched here first. And then my body just followed suit so I do feel amazing.”
Lizzo credits workouts like pilates and yoga sculpting as well as pickleball and going on hikes as part of her exercise regimen.
The Detroit native pushed back when co-host Charlamagne Tha God said he doesn’t consider her “big” anymore. “I am big,” she said. “What we talking about? Baby, I’m big.”
Lizzo added: “The Internet is like, ‘Oh Lizzo’s skinny now,'” she said. “I am well over 200 pounds, do you know what I’m saying? I’m 5-foot-9. I got double-numbered pants on now.”
While Lizzo said she reached her weight loss goal in January, a number she hasn’t seen on the scale since 2014, the singer still looks in the mirror and sees her 2023 self, and even at her heaviest, Lizzo says she still felt mentally skinnier back then compared to now.
“Put me next to any pop star right now, I’m still bigger than them,” she explained. “I didn’t realize how much my body changed until I was filming the ‘Love in Real Life’ music video. I was in shock. It shocked me, because the way that I’m releasing weight has been a long slow process,” she added. “People may not have seen me or been keeping up with me, but I’ve been posting about it, and I’m in a calorie deficit, so that’s the one that sneaks up on you.”
Lizzo continued: “When I was bigger, I felt skinnier than I do now. When I was in my string bikini and I was at my heaviest weight, I was like, ‘Skinny bi—.’ That’s when I realized skinny was a feeling and not a look.”
While she’s feeling “Good as Hell,” Lizzo is gearing up for a new album. She returned with her “Love in Real Life” and “Still Bad” singles earlier this year.
