#MAGFAB: COSMOPOLITAN Asks Actor and Star Tyriq Withers What's it's like Being a Famously Hot Man

Tyriq Withers isn’t ashamed to be a loverboy. Between his breakout role last year in the Jordan Peele–produced movie HIM to starring in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s REMINDERS OF HIM, Tyriq Withers is on the brink of full-fledged superstardom. But his newfound fame hasn’t stopped the 6’5″ heartthrob from searching for the one. Now, as the latest COSMOPOLITAN Centerfold, Tyriq opens up about body image, the highs and lows of dating these days, and why he’s really just a “soft, sensitive boy.”
On what it’s like to be a Famously Hot Man: [laughs] “I appreciate it. That’s a great question. Shoutout to my mom and dad? You know, they did the damn thing. But no, I don’t know. I just kind of, like, detach. I’m thankful that people find me attractive. But some people find me not attractive!”

On when he became more aware of his appearance and beauty standards: “I think the moment everything started to shift for me was when I realized I was going to have to take my shirt off on camera for a movie. It caused this, like, body dysmorphia. I became hyperfixated on the little things about my body. There are times when I don’t want to go to the beach because I don’t feel like taking my shirt off. There are times when I dread taking a shower because I don’t want to take off my clothes and, like, look at my body, you know? So I think that’s a recent thing, when the work I tapped into started to really put me in those circumstances where my looks are, like, a thing.”
On if he’ll kiss on a first date: “I wouldn’t say never, but the ball is in her court. I’ve been called so passive. I’ve never, like, leaned in and we just kiss like that. I don’t know how people do that. I always just ask out loud. Like, ‘This is awkward, but I need to hear it from you.’ I’ve been kissed [on the first date], and that’s been lovely.”

On whether he likes dating: “Do I? Oh my god. Yes and no. I like dating the right person. But it gets expensive—and not even financially. It’s expensive, like, on my heart and mental state. So I’m just kind of chilling. We can hang out in group settings, do karaoke, go, like, wrestle pigs….I’m waiting for a girl to be like, ‘Let’s go paintballing.’ Because I hate paintballing, but I like weird sh*t. I’m, like, date-fishing. Put this in the article so people ask me out.”
On being open to someone sliding into his DMs: “I think that’s so bold. But it has to be the right person. I don’t really slide into DMs; I never know what to say.”
On whether he’s noticed a difference between dating pre-fame vs. post-fame: “I haven’t really dated post-fame. I don’t even view it as…it’s so mind-blowing to me that people have seen my work and, like, get excited about my work. I don’t even think I have fame. I don’t know, it’s weird. But I’m excited to see how that is.”

On being relationship-oriented: “I’m such a relationship-oriented person. I yearn—and that is my superpower but also my biggest flaw. I am a loverboy. I’m a Cancer, so you know how we get. I’m not interested in surface-level things. On a date, I’m like, ‘What sets your soul on fire?’ [laughs] I’m just looking for love. But when you tap into self-love, then love finds you.”
On love: “I think love is a feeling, right? It’s like a soul connection. I know I feel love—or am in love—when I just want to protect this person at all costs, protect their heart. I think I know I’m in love when I give you the last bite of my pumpkin pie, because that’s my favorite. I think when love happens…it’s a spectrum, right? I think you build that love over time. And I think love looks like so many different things. It looks like the last bite; it looks like learning their hobbies. I love seeing the joy they have in the things they do and I get joy out of seeing them experience joy. I think that’s when I know I’m in love: I yearn for their joy. Like, how can I bring them joy in all facets? Oh, I know I’m in love when I baby-talk. Like, when I don’t feel weird baby-talking to a person.”
#RHOA: NeNe Leakes Clarifies Rumored New Boyfriend After His Criminal Past Is Revealed
NeNe Leakes is setting the record straight regarding her dating life, after she made headlines that she has a new boyfriend. Shortly after his identity was revealed, fans went investigation mode and uncovered his criminal past.
The “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star responded by taking to social media to offer clarity on the actual status between them.
Leakes addressed her current relationship status after she was recently seen out cuddling and kissing a new man, identified as Memphis attorney Arthur Horne III. The reality TV icon offered the clarity after online sleuths dug into Horne’s past and discovered his prior criminal history.
Leakes explained in the video clip that she simply “went on a date” and that she and Horne are not in a relationship or serious about each other. She also shared that she is in her “soft girl era” and wants to date multiple people like men often do.
Leakes continued, noting that she felt bad for Horne because his past had been publicly exposed because he was seen out with her.
According to TMZ, Arthur Horne III was previously arrested for allegedly raping and assaulting his ex-girlfriend in Tennessee back in 2017 but was later convicted of a misdemeanor.
The law firm that Horne owns released a statement to the outlet after the news of Horne’s past circulated online.
"Nearly a decade ago, a jury heard all of the evidence and found Arthur Earle Horne III NOT GUILTY on every serious charge brought against him, including aggravated rape, aggravated kidnapping, and aggravated assault,” the statement said. “That is the verdict. That is the record."
"With respect to the misdemeanor, Mr. Horne has always maintained his innocence and accepted the outcome of that proceeding while never wavering from the truth. That matter was resolved by the courts years ago and he has nothing further to say about it,” the statement continued.
Per TMZ, on February 25, Leakes attended the Memphis Grizzlies basketball game with Horne, and they definitely looked like they were more than friends.
Per video from the outlet, Leakes and Horne were seen kissing while sitting courtside at the game and also cuddled up together with matching smiles.
In addition to owning his own firm, Horne also practices criminal defense and personal injury law, according to the outlet.
Leakes’ last public relationship was with Nyonisela Sioh, whom she dated off and on from 2021 until 2023.
#MusicNews: New Edition Nominated for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Iconic R&B supergroup New Edition has officially been nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, marking a historic milestone for the ensemble that served as the definitive blueprint for the modern boy-band era.
The nomination arrives amidst the group’s highly successful “The New Edition Way” national arena tour. Comprising members Ronnie DeVoe, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant, and Johnny Gill, the group attributed their continued momentum to their dedicated “NE4Lifers” fanbase, which has sustained the group’s relevance for nearly five decades.
Long before the “boy band” became a multi-billion-dollar global industry, New Edition redefined the R&B-pop landscape. By synthesizing vocal precision, synchronized choreography, and distinct individual branding, the group established a crossover production model that continues to influence contemporary acts.
New Edition holds a unique distinction in music history: every individual member has achieved platinum status outside of the group. Collectively, the group and its offshoots have amassed over **20 platinum certifications** and billions of streams.
The group’s influence extends well beyond the charts. Their 2017 biopic, “The New Edition Story”, became a cultural phenomenon, drawing 29 million viewers and ranking as one of cable’s most-watched miniseries.
Recent industry accolades further signaled this week’s nomination. In 2023, the group received a standing ovation at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony for their tribute to The Spinners, a moment widely seen as a precursor to their own inclusion on the ballot.
As the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame evaluates artists who have fundamentally altered the trajectory of popular music, New Edition’s nomination recognizes a career that transitioned from teen stardom to enduring architectural influence on the global pop marketplace.
#HipHopNews: Jack Harlow Explains New R&B Era: “I Got Blacker”
Jack Harlow turns 28, and he releases an R&B album. Harlow recorded his new LP Monica at New York's Electric Lady studio after moving to the city, and it represents an extremely unexpected career pivot for the onetime pop-rap hitmaker. Harlow's last full-length was the relatively low-key 2023 rap LP Jackman. On Monica, he reintroduces himself as a neo-soul singer. In a new interview, Harlow explains the transition by saying, "I got Blacker" — a wild thing for a white artist to say.
Harlow is the guest on the New York Times Popcast with my guys Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli. In the free-flowing conversation, Harlow says that he scrapped an album that he'd been working on for two years because it wasn't "exciting" to him: "It just struck me that I would want to do something a little more egoless. As I’m getting older, I’m having more trouble reconciling being braggadocious on record... I love softer, more melodic stuff. More than anything, I think I made this out of, 'What do I want to hear?'"
When the conversation turns to race, Coscarelli says, "White rappers are afforded more freedom to change the genre at will." Caramanica points out, "Country music, for example, has become a safe landing place for former white rappers. Rock music has become a safe landing place." Coscarelli continues, "You didn't retreat into a whiter genre. In fact, you arguably went deeper into Black music." That's when Harlow cuts him off and says, "I got Blacker."
He doesn't mean that literally. He smiles a little when he says it, as if he knows how it sounds. Allow him to elaborate:
I love Black music. I love the sound of Black music. And of course, I’m hyper-aware of the politics of today, that safer landing spot that a lot of my white contemporaries have found. And of course, it appealed to me to do something that I felt, at a time when there's certainly people that expect me to take the routes y'all are taking, to take the route that not only might not be expected but is also the route that I genuinely want to take. So all the stars aligned in that way for me, to be honest.
I'm not gonna pretend that what you're talking about, I was like, "Huh, I guess you're right!" I know that there are multiple things appealing about this route, but I also came to the decision, I'm proud to say, off of what feels good in my ear. I love R&B music. I love the sound of soft, intimate, melodic music. So I want to be understood. I want to write melodies that invite people to sing along...
I've always loved D'Angelo. I've always loved Erykah. I've always loved the intimacy and plush quality of that music, and if you look at my discography, there's little hints of this. There's Rhodes piano playing on "First Class." There's songs throughout that are — I really don't like erratic music. I don't like loud music. I like soft music. I like smooth music. I spend a lot of time sitting in silence. I like silence. So when I play music, I don't want it to part from silence. I don't like going to the club because of the volume.
It goes on from there. You can watch that podcast interview below. The race part of the conversation starts at the 12:36 mark.
Harlow recorded Monica with PinkPantheress collaborator Aksel Arvid on board as executive producer. Singer Jermaine Paul plays bass on the entiire LP, and jazz great Robert Glasper plays piano on a few songs. Ravyn Lenae, Omar Apollo, and Mustafa contribute guest vocals.

#RIP: Legendary Actress Judy Pace, Passes Away At 83

Veteran actress and model Judy Pace — known for her roles in 1970s Blaxploitation films and classic television — has passed away at 83.
Pace’s daughters, Shawn Pace Mitchell and actress Julia Pace Mitchell, announced the news, revealing their mother “died peacefully in her sleep” on Wednesday while visiting family in Marina Del Rey.
Born June 15, 1942, in Los Angeles, Pace began her career as a model and became Ebony Fashion Fair’s youngest model in 1961 before transitioning into acting.
She made her onscreen debut in William Castle’s 1963 Cold War spy film 13 Frightened Girls, a role that launched her career and made her the first Black woman contracted at Columbia Studios. Throughout the 1960s, she appeared on television shows including I Spy, Batman, Bewitched, Days of Our Lives, The Flying Nun, The Mod Squad, Tarzan, and Peyton Place.
Pace later won an NAACP Image Award for Best Actress for her role as Pat Walters on the ABC drama The Young Lawyers, which aired from 1969 to 1971. In the 1970s, she starred in Blaxploitation films including Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970) and The Slams (1973), and portrayed the wife of football legend Gale Sayers in the acclaimed TV movie Brian’s Song (1971).
Outside of acting, Pace was also a philanthropist who co-founded the Kwanza Foundation in 1971 with Nichelle Nichols, supporting Black women working in film and providing scholarships to minority students pursuing careers in the arts. She is survived by daughters Shawn Pace Mitchell and Julia Pace Mitchell, grandson Stephen Lamar Hightower III, son-in-law Otto Strong, and other family members. Her family has asked that donations be made to the NAACP in her honor in lieu of flowers.
Nicki Minaj Seemingly Announces That She Is Neurodivergent
Polarizing superstar Nicki Minaj has social media buzzing again after posting a series of tweets suggesting that she may be neurodivergent.
On Friday (March 13) the femcee co-signed a remark made by Palantir CEO, Alex Karp, who said that the future belongs to the “neurodivergent.”
Minaj reposted his tweet writing:

In her sequence of posts on the cognitive function, Minaj praised Elon Musk for his billionaire status. “Neurodivergents watching our leader Elon be the richest & smartest while the others realize they’re cooked,” she posted.
Musk has previously been outspoken about his autism diagnosis.
Minaj’s post was paired with an image of the creepy red-haired doll from the horror movie Child’s Play, adding a humorous and strange tone to her posts.
The Cleveland Clinic defines neurodivergent as a “nonmedical term that describes people whose brains develop or work differently for some reason. This means the person has different strengths and struggles from people whose brains develop or work more typically.”
Minaj has made headlines in recent weeks for her political hot takes. The Trinidad and Tobago-born rapper previously declared herself to be Donald Trump’s “number one fan.” She has also praised JD Vance for being an “amazing role model” for young men. In defense of Trump, Minaj most recently attacked Don Lemon’s sexuality suggesting that he should be thrown in jail.
The Knowles-Rowland House, An $8.4M Housing Project, Aims To Combat Homelessness In Houston

Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland are once again investing in Houston, TX, the city that shaped their careers.
The duo has found continued success beyond their involvement in Destiny’s Child, originally named Girl’s Tyme.
Beyoncé is a Houston native and spent most of her childhood in the city’s Third Ward, the Houston Chronicle reports. Rowland is an Atlanta, GA native, but has credited Houston as the city that changed her life both personally and professionally in a previous interview with AFROTECH™.
“It was a city that grew me up. I always say Atlanta-born me. Houston raised me. Houston raised me with Southern values. Houston raised me to be proud of my Blackness as well,” Rowland said.
Now the pair are giving back to the city by investing in an $8.4 million permanent housing project called the Knowles-Rowland House, BET reports. The 31-unit project will support those experiencing homelessness.
Additionally, it will offer social services, including case management, mental health counseling, substance use treatment, life skills training, and nutrition assistance, through a partnership with the Temenos Community Development Corporation.
What’s more, The Knowles-Rowland House now resides in the building that was previously the home of the Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth, which was built with funds from Destiny’s Child’s first single, notes BET. The center opened in 1999, but was damaged by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and a fire in 2021, leaving the building vacant.
The project gives the building renewed purpose and is also backed by Bread of Life, a Houston nonprofit that provides food and shelter to those in need, according to its website.
Tina Knowles, the mother of Beyoncé, reposted a video of the apartment unit, disclosing that the facility will open in Downtown Houston.
The project is expected to be completed in early 2026, per BET.

Kevin Hart’s Son Commits To Univ of Tennessee For Track and Field
Kevin Hart’s son Hendrix Hart has committed to University of Tennessee’s track and field program.
The comedian shared the milestone to his 170 million followers on Thursday (March 13). “Proud of you son…. The sky is the limit!!!!! Continue to raise your personal bar…. I can’t wait to see what you do next!!!! We all love you champ,” Kevin wrote.
In the photos, Hendrix can be seen wearing an orange track suit posing against an orange back drop.
Under the announcement, congratulations poured into the comment section from Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James who wrote “Yessir nephew.” Other salutes came from former Tennessee sprint stars Justin Gatlin and Christian Coleman, rappers Nelly and Jadakiss, and more.
Hendrix is a senior at Sierra Canyon who started running his sophomore year, per Athletic.net. He scored a 10.68-second personal best in the 100-meter dash and 21.35 seconds in the 200-meter dash during the 2025 outdoor season.
“We’re building a great program here, and we think he’ll contribute to that tremendously,” Tennessee coach Duane Ross told ESPN. “This is a humble young man that’s just excited to get his path going, wants to be good and create his own thing.”
Dwyane Wade Speaks Out On Trans Kids Amid Political Fight _”Love” Should Lead, Not Hate

Dwyane Wade is continuing to speak out in support of transgender youth — while spotlighting the families navigating the political battles surrounding them.
The NBA legend and father of transgender daughter Zaya executive produced a documentary called “The Dads,” which premiered March 14 at SXSW in Austin. The film follows fathers of transgender and gender-expansive children as they connect at retreats in rural Maine and Minnesota, bonding over the challenges of raising their kids in a shifting social and political climate.
Wade said the project resonated with him on a personal level. “Sometimes you think you’re alone on the journey of life, a lot, especially in this,” he said. “I thought I was alone, and then I realized there’s other dads out there. There’s other dads of color out there. You just never know the community.”
The documentary also explores the tension many families are feeling as national debates intensify — including the fallout from President Donald Trump’s reelection and a Supreme Court decision upholding Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors. Some fathers featured in the film even grapple with whether it’s better to stay in the U.S. and fight for their kids or leave the country.
Despite the political climate, Wade says he tries to keep his perspective simple. “I think everything in our world can be solved with a four-letter word called love,” he said. “That’s what I lead with. That’s what I try to give to every human being, every person that I meet.”
For Wade, embracing people’s differences is key. “That’s the beauty in this world, is that we all are not the same,” he said. “I dislike the ones who try to make us all be the same, because that’s just impossible.”
Dionne Warwick Accuses Rights Firm of Taking Millions in Royalties
Dionne Warwick is escalating her legal battle against a music rights company, accusing it of siphoning millions of dollars from her catalog over decades.
In a newly filed countersuit obtained by Billboard, the legendary vocalist claims that Artists Rights Enforcement Corp. engaged in long-running fraud involving royalties from some of her most recognizable recordings.
The filing marks a major turn in an ongoing dispute between Warwick and the firm, which initially sued her last year over what it said was a breach of their partnership agreement.
According to the countersuit, Warwick alleges the company exploited a brief agreement she signed in 2001 that was originally meant to help recover unpaid royalties. Her attorneys say the firm used that document to claim a share of income from songs recorded decades earlier, ultimately collecting millions in payments tied to her catalog.
The lawsuit specifically references royalties tied to several of Warwick’s best-known songs, including “Walk On By,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “That’s What Friends Are For,” and “Do You Know the Way to San Jose.”
In the court filing, her attorney Robert S. Meloni argued that the company’s public image masked a far different reality behind the scenes. “Ms. Warwick seeks to expose AREC’s performative ethics and vindicate her rights,” Meloni wrote, accusing the firm of decades-long “pilfering” of the royalties generated by the singer’s recordings.
Warwick’s complaint also claims the company interfered with a potential business deal involving Primary Wave. According to the filing, Warwick had been exploring a transaction involving revenue streams from her sound recordings, but the rights firm allegedly contacted Primary Wave and asserted that she lacked the authority to complete the deal.
The countersuit comes months after the company filed its own legal complaint in December 2025. In that earlier case, the firm argued that Warwick violated their agreement by attempting to cut it out of revenue streams tied to her catalog. The dispute reportedly includes earnings from a high-profile sample of “Walk On By” in Doja Cat's “Paint the Town Red.”
The relationship between Warwick and the company dates back to 2001, when she hired the firm to recover unpaid royalties owed to Warner Music Group. At the time, Warwick allegedly agreed to give the firm 50 percent of any money recovered from that specific effort.
In her latest filing, however, she claims the firm later expanded the scope of that agreement to seek half of her earnings from recordings dating back as far as 1962.
Founded in 1977 by music industry figure Chuck Rubin, the rights firm built its reputation around helping artists reclaim lost royalties. Today, the company is run by his daughter, Gabin Rubin.
Michael B. Jordan Hits Up In-N-Out After Oscars 2026 Win, Gets Huge Cheers From Patrons

Michael B. Jordan won the Best Actor Academy Award last night, and one of his first orders of business afterwards was to grab some food at In-N-Out!
Video has emerged from inside the establishment, where the 39-year-old Sinners star placed his order to huge cheers as crowds of patrons tried to get a glimpse of the star.
He eventually got his order – which appeared to be two Double-Doubles and fries.
He sat in a booth and ate a bit of his meal, all while people were calling out congratulatory messages. Michael even made some conversation with a group when they told him they saw Sinners multiple times.
Michael did not stay long and only ate a few bites of his burger before leaving. He quickly hit up the Vanity Fair Oscars party that same night as well.
We have video from Instagram user Nem Perez, who caught nearly all of the restaurant visit on video.

Congrats to Michael B. Jordan on the Academy Award win!
TLC’s Chilli Faces Backlash After Sharing Michelle Obama is a Man Conspiracy Theory
*Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, one-third of the iconic 90s group TLC, is at the center of an online firestorm. Reports indicate that the singer reposted content on her Instagram story promoting the long-standing and thoroughly debunked conspiracy theory that former First Lady Michelle Obama is a man.
On Reddit, the criticism was similarly pointed. One user in the r/Fauxmoi thread remarked: “Not only is this a psychotic conspiracy theory, it’s: transphobic, sexist, and racist.” Another added, “Of all of the legit things you could criticize the Obama’s for during their time in office, to resort to spreading far-right conspiracies (as a black person at that), just says a lot about you.”
According to screenshots circulating on Reddit’s r/Fauxmoi and forums like Lipstick Alley, the repost remained visible on Chilli’s account for nearly 24 hours as of March 12, 2026. The content reportedly included an altered image of the Obamas alongside text falsely claiming Michelle Obama had registered to vote as a male, a narrative that has persisted for years despite repeated fact-checks.
The conspiracy theory targeting Michelle Obama is not new. It has been fueled by misinformation, manipulated photos, and out-of-context quotes, often carrying transphobic, sexist, and racially charged undertones aimed at prominent women of color. Fact-checking organizations like PolitiFact have consistently debunked the claims, finding no credible evidence to support them. Mrs. Obama herself addressed the rumors in her bestselling memoir Becoming, dismissing them as ignorant and baseless internet speculation. The specific post shared by Chilli reportedly featured a blurred and unverified voter registration form, a classic piece of disinformation that has circulated in fringe corners of the internet for years.
The reaction from fans and observers was swift and overwhelmingly negative. On the Lipstick Alley forums, where the incident was hotly debated, users expressed a mix of shock and resignation, with many pointing to what they perceive as a pattern of behavior from the singer. One user wrote scathingly: “She is a whole weirdo. she’s always correcting people when they call her black, by reminding them she’s got that lil bangladeshi in her. i wouldn’t be surprised if she was one of those mentally ill black maga folk or a mentally ill hotep who loves conspiracy theories.”
Another commenter echoed the sentiment of disappointment, stating: “Y’all not done with her delusional tap-dancing ass yet? She’s already shown everyone who she is and how she thinks…nothing shocking here.”On Reddit, the criticism was similarly pointed.
Some commenters questioned whether the repost could have been an accident, given how easy it is to inadvertently reshare content on Instagram. However, many were skeptical, pointing to the nearly 24-hour duration as evidence of intent. Others noted that even an accidental repost raises questions about the kind of content populating her feed in the first place.
The incident has also resurfaced past discussions about Chilli’s public persona and personal views. Forum users referenced her well-documented Christian faith—her Instagram bio includes “Follower of Christ Jesus”—and past remarks about her racial identity, with some accusing her of harboring anti-Black sentiments or “colorist” attitudes.
As of this writing, Chilli has not publicly addressed the controversy on her official social media channels, nor has she deleted the repost according to some reports. Major news outlets have yet to cover the story extensively, with the discussion primarily bubbling in gossip blogs and niche forums.
For a generation of women who grew up admiring TLC’s messages of empowerment and self-respect, the incident has left a bitter taste. Whether an accident or a reflection of personal belief, the repost has thrust Chilli into a conversation about celebrity responsibility, the danger of misinformation, and the persistent targeting of Black women by ugly, baseless conspiracy theories.Sean Penn Skips 2026 Oscars to Visit Ukraine Instead

Sean Penn won the award for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars on Sunday (March 15), but he was notably absent to accept his award.
Penn won his third Academy Award, but he wasn’t in attendance at the ceremony, where he was nominated for his performance in One Battle After Another. Everyone else nominated in the category—including his co-star Benicio Del Toro, Jacob Elordi, Delroy Lindo, and Stellan Skarsgärd—were in attendance. When Kieran Culkin announced Penn as the winner, he said, “Sean Penn couldn’t be here this evening, or didn’t want to, so I’ll be accepting the award on his behalf.”
Penn, who previously won Best Actor for his performances in Mystic River and Milk, opted to skip the ceremony this year. As reported by The New York Times, he’s currently in Ukraine as part of his support for the country and its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, amid the Russian invasion. Penn also directed a documentary about the Russian invasion, Superpower.
He notably didn’t attend the BAFTAs or the Screen Actors Guild, where he also won for One Battle After Another, but he did attend the Golden Globes, where he was nominated but did not win.
The last time a major winner skipped out on picking up their Oscar award was in 2024, when Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki didn’t show up to collect his statuette for The Boy and the Heron. But Penn has a history of criticizing the Academy. In 2023, he said that when he saw Will Smith slap Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards, he wanted to melt down his Oscars so they could be used for bullets in Ukraine.
He also called the Academy’s refusal to invite Zelenskyy to speak “fucking bullshit,” and that if he did, then Smith would have “never left that chair.” Penn, who has been accused of striking his ex-wife, Madonna, multiple times throughout their marriage, said he drew the line at Smith’s slap.
